South Lookout:
We drove east from the Sault Ste. Marie to Desbarats ON and turned right onto Mink Point Road. We didn't drive far before encountering a parking lot to the right with the Kensington Conservancy trail sign. It was a little mucky in places but not too bad. There was a large trail map at the beginning of the trail and the trail itself was very clearly marked.
We followed the trail along the edge of a field until it lead us into the bushes. There appeared to be crushed rock used to help minimize soakers. It wasn't long before we came to a fork. There was an old bench and some information placards on the local vegetation, many of which were along the trail.
We decided to go left to the South Lookout first. A creek soon blocked our way, but we found it easy to cross. We walked for a bit longer and came to a steep hill. We were able to climb it fairly easily and continued on up to a clearing.
It was a rocky climb up to the South lookout, but it was quite easy. When we reached thet op, we could see far in the one direction, but it was mostly forest. The trail continued down the other side and when we reached the trees we found a sign directing us to the Boyer South Loop on the Boyer Preserve, also part of the Kensington Conservancy.
There was a vast array of flora; we noticed many different trees and shrubs in the area, each identified by a well done placard. We crossed a shallow stream and quickly reached the fork of the South Loop.
We chose to head left up to the lookout, which we almost immediately reached. It was a nice clearing, but the view was again mostly forest. The trail continued on, winding its way up and then down to the shore of a bay on the lake.
The bay was calm and there was an island with a few old buildings. It was a very scenic area. It was around this area we noticed signs warning of poison ivy in the immediate area.
We walked down the trail as it followed a densely brushed shore line. After a bit, we turned and headed a bit uphill. We passed two interesting clearings as we steadily climbed backup to complete the loop. Once we finished the Boyer South loop, we followed the same trail back out from whence we came.
North Lookout:
When we got back to the fork, we took the North Trail. The trail wound us around and we eventually came out to a very cool clearing with scattered clumps of pine. There were many more informational placards as we followed up the rocky path up to the lookout.
When we got to the lookout, we could see some forests, fields, and then the highway. It was a much nicer view then the other two lookouts, and it offered better angles for pictures.
On our way back, once we reached the first field again, we saw a baby garter snake. It was super cute!
